Over the years we've seen a few services that help to put your social activities into Google Earth, but none that have done a very effective job of it. That's where Junctions (jnctns.com) comes in, with a very innovative iPhone applications that can help build maps of your social actions.

The service automatically builds "Ex Maps" (experience maps), which are 3D interactive maps of your social activity. Real-world interactions are noted in exMaps as cross-able intersections called "junctions". Users can dynamically browse all content based on location, time and/or people.

For now, the system requires that you use their i Phone applications, but that will be changing in the future. Soon you'll be able to add tweets to it with the Map Hashtag, and they have other plans in mind as well. Personally, I'd love to be able to just feed it my full Twitter and Four Square accounts and let it just parse the data from them. It seems like this is the direction they're heading, so it'll be fun to watch them progress.

Popular news items may receive a large number of page views but experience a lower ad click-through rate (CTR) and/or cost-per-click (CPC). The advantage to writing news content is a correlation between high traffic and revenue, while the disadvantage is less long-term revenue potential.

Being indexed in Google News doesn’t prevent an article from being indexed in regular web search, nor will it necessarily diminish the ability of an article to rank well in web search. Google News offers another inbound traffic vector, both from news.google.com itself, and from news results that appear intermingled with web results. Of course, the more an article is focused on something timely or topically relevant, the more likely it will find traction in news rather than web search, especially in the long run.

    * In regular Google search results – News articles are displayed on the first page of Google search results; the article’s primary image can help increase traffic to an article.
    * In Google News search results – News articles are also displayed in Google News search results.

Articles suitable for inclusion in the Google News index are “articles that provide timely reporting on recent events”. The criteria for creating newsworthy content are as follows:

    * Article must reference, by date, events that have recently occurred or are about to occur. For events that have passed, it must be something that has occurred within the past 48–72 hours. For future events, it must be something that will occur within the next seven days. The full date, year included, must be used.
    * News must be the focus of the article, rather than allude to it in passing. For example, an article focusing on what occurred at the Haiti Conference of 25 January 2010 in Montreal is legitimate; an article discussing the history of foreign assistance to Haiti and using the conference simply as a hook or segue is not legitimate.

These categories are legitimate, provided they fulfill the criteria above:

    * Sporting events, including recaps and previews.
    * TV show previews/reviews and film reviews, providing these immediately precede/follow the show or film release.
    * Recent events surrounding individuals of interest, such as births, deaths, accidents, engagements, marriages, divorces, break-ups, and so forth.

Google does not consider the following types of articles to be newsworthy:

    * informational and how-to articles
    * event announcements
    * advice articles

While news articles must contain the standard elements of an article (i.e., titles, summary paragraphs, subheadings, and images), articles containing lists that lack terminal punctuation (i.e., periods), such as in bulleted and numbered lists, will not get indexed. These incomplete sentences can lead to an indexing error whereby Google News views the content as “fragmented” and thus won’t pick up the article. Only articles with complete sentences will be picked up by Google News.

The search giant is introducing the beta version of the latest platform in 100 countries as it bids to take on Internet Explorer and Firefox.

I was as blindsided by Google Chrome as everyone, but there's no negate that its release was a significant occasion. Chrome is more than just a browser; it represents Google's most recent entry in the ongoing discussion of standards and paramount practices for the Web as an application platform. As such, it may be the company's most imperative offering since Gears which is an open source project that enables more powerful web applications, by accumulation of new features to your web browser:

"From my outlook, Google Chrome and Gears are entering the Web from two directions," says Google's Adam Goodman in Scott Mc Cloud's comic-strip introduction to Chrome. Web Kit, an improved version of the open source KHTML project, is the rendering engine used by Apple for its Safari browser. It's also the engine found in both Apple's iPhone and Google Android, arguably the two most important mobile Web platforms today. Web Kit's HTML and JavaScript code began as a branch of the KHTML and KJS libraries from KDE. This website is also the home of S60's S60 Web Kit development.

That means Google Chrome isn't yet another browser to support,

Pretty, it's one more vote in favor of making Web Kit a primary target for new Web development projects. It only makes sense to test against the engine that's available on the extensive range of platforms and devices.

On Tuesday morning, January 21, the world awoke to nine new words on the home page of Google Inc., purveyor of the most popular search engine on the Web: "New! Take your search further. Take a Google Tour." The pitch, linked to a demo of the site's often overlooked tools and services, stayed up for 14 days and then disappeared.

To most reasonable people, the fleeting house ad seemed inconsequential. But imagine that you're unreasonable. For a moment, try to think like a Google engineer -- which pretty much requires being both insanely passionate about delivering the best search results and obsessive about how you do that.

If you're a Google engineer, you know that those nine words comprised about 120 bytes of data, enough to slow download time for users with modems by 20 to 50 milliseconds. You can estimate the stress that 120 bytes, times millions of searches per minute, put on Google's 10,000 servers. On the other hand, you can also measure precisely how many visitors took the tour, how many of those downloaded the Google Toolbar, and how many clicked through for the first time to Google News.

This is what it's like inside Google. It is a joint founded by geeks and run by geeks. It is a collection of 650 really smart people who are almost frighteningly single-minded. "These are people who think they are creating something that's the best in the world," says Peter Norvig, a Google engineering director. "And that product is changing people's lives."

Geeks are different from the rest of us, so it's no surprise that they've created a different sort of company. Google is, in fact, their dream house. It also happens to be among the best-run companies in the technology sector. At a moment when much of business has resigned itself to the pursuit of sameness and safety, Google proposes an almost joyous antidote to mediocrity, a model for smart innovation in challenging times.

Google's tale is a familiar one: Two Stanford doctoral students, Sergey Brin and Larry Page, developed a set of algorithms that in 1998 sparked a holy-shit leap in Web-search performance. Basically, they turned search into a popularity contest. In addition to gauging a phrase's appearance on a Web page, as other engines did, it assessed relevance by counting the number and importance of other pages that linked to that page.

Since then, newer search products such as Teoma and Fast have essentially matched Google's advance. But Google remains the undisputed search heavyweight. Google says it processes more than 150 million searches a day -- and the true number is probably much higher than that. Google's revenue model is notoriously tough to deconstruct: Analysts guess that its revenue last year was anywhere from $60 million to $300 million. But they also guess that Google made quite a bit of money.

As a result, there is constant, hopeful speculation among financiers around an initial public offering, a deal that could be this decade's equivalent of the 1995 Netscape IPO. A few years back, such a deal might have valued Google at $3 billion or more. Even today, a Google offering might fetch $1 billion.

For now, though, most of the cars in the lot outside Google's modest offices in a Mountain View, California office park are beat-up Volvos and Subarus, not Porsches. And while Googlers may relish their shot at impossible wealth, they appear driven more by the quest for impossible perfection. They want to build something that searches every bit of information on the Web. More important, they want to deliver exactly what the user is looking for, every time. They know that this won't ever happen, and yet they keep at it. They also pursue a seemingly gratuitous quest for speed: Four years ago, the average search took approximately 3 seconds. Now it's down to about 0.2 seconds. And since 0.2 is more than zero, it's not quite fast enough.

Google understands that its two most important assets are the attention and trust of its users. If it takes too long to deliver results or an additional word of text on the home page is too distracting, Google risks losing people's attention. If the search results are lousy, or if they are compromised by advertising, it risks losing people's trust. Attention and trust are sacrosanct.

Google also understands the capacity of the Web to leverage expertise. Its product-engineering effort is more like an ongoing, all-hands discussion. The site features about 10 technologies in development, many of which may never be products per se. They are there because Google wants to see how people react. It wants feedback and ideas. Having people in on the game who know a lot of stuff tells you earlier whether good ideas are good ideas that will actually work.

Sid here.  I want to warn you guys about a massive exploit that has hit a large number of Godaddy Hosted WordPress Blogs this weekend

This hack appears to redirect visitors upon arrival from Google and attempts to install mal-ware on their computers.  When I was visiting the site directly, whether logged in or as an Admin, even if I could see the malicious script in my view-source window I did not have any issues and it did not redirect me. This means your site could be hacked and infected and you may be unaware.

I noticed a couple key give a ways:

In view source, you will see <script src=”http://cechirecom.com/js.php”> located just above the </body> tag on all .php files.  If you view source and see this, that’s cause for alarm

When logged in, you’ll have a screwed up WordPress dashboard. Basically it looks like it is messing up the loading of some CSS in the WordPress Admin area, causing everything

The good news is this attack appears to be based only on your actual files – not your database. That’s relatively easy to clean up.  In GoDaddy you should be able to revert to an old version of your files (Go to April 23rd or before and you should be fine)

The bad news is we don’t know at this point how the hackers are gaining access.

Oscar season 2011 is over. At the Academy Awards ceremony last night, The King’s Speech took home the coveted Best Picture award, besting such prominent contenders as The Social Network and Inception. Just like last year, the winner of the award was chosen using the Academy’s “preferential voting” system, otherwise known as instant runoff voting. And once again, the results refute the notion that the preferential voting system tilts the playing field in favor of any certain kind of film.

In the wake of the ceremony, there has been speculation in some quarters that The King’s Speech might have been helped along to victory by the preferential balloting method. But a quick look at results from this year and last shows that this argument stands on shaky factual ground. Just as The Hurt Locker did last year, The King’s Speech won both the Best Picture award and the prize for Best Director. Unlike the Best Picture category, which was expanded to a ten-candidate preferential ballot contest last year, the Best Director category is decided by a more traditional formula: Five nominees are selected, and the winner is chosen by a simple plurality vote. If there were, as skeptics claim, a built-in advantage for certain candidates in the IRV system, then we would expect the Best Director category to produce results different from the Best Picture outcome. But in each of the first two years of preferential balloting, the results have been the same, with the Best Picture winner also taking home the Oscars for Best Director. This would suggest that, far from radically upsetting the traditional system, the introduction of IRV in the Best Picture Category has simply provided a means to protect fair outcomes while expanding the field to ten candidates.

As regular readers of this blog will know, voters in the United Kingdom will soon cast ballots in a May 5 referendum to decide whether IRV (known locally as the Alternative Vote) will be used for future elections in that country. As the decision date nears, one very familiar organization using IRV has endorsed the system - the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The Independent reports that AMPAS is happy with the performance of IRV in Best Picture elections and plans to continue using the system. Executive Director of AMPAS, voiced the organization’s satisfaction, citing IRV’s support of fair outcomes and boost to voter turnout.

For our most important category we wanted to ensure that more than half the electorate endorsed the choice. We're very happy with the way it's working and we don't plan to change it.
